  273. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying
  274. it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
  275. to register.  Individual programs differ on details.  Some request
  276. registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. 
  277. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using
  278. the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  280. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
  281. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
  282. stated below.  Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
  283. commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.  (In both
  284. cases, there are good programs and bad ones!)  The main difference is in the
  285. method of distribution.  The author specifically grants the right to copy
  286. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific

  475. JEANius Software Overview
  476.  
  477. The JEANius Card Inventory System is a complete Sport Card Inventory and
  478. Value System.
  479.  
  480. Using the Examine Card Sets option you track your sets.  You can make sets
  481. from individual cards and split sets into individual cards.  You can
  482. generate statistics on your complete inventory or on a particular card
  483. set.
  484.  
  485. You can track cards which will never be included in a set by using the
  486. Examine Single Cards option.  This means that you do not require a database
  487. for an entire set of cards if you only choose to have a single card from a
  488. set.  For example you may have a 1952 Parkhurst  card, and you know that
  489. you will never complete the set.
  490.  
  491. Their are many reports available to you in the Report Menu option.  You
  492. have reports which tell you which cards you require to complete a set,
  493. extra cards you have in any set, Price Guide listing, among others.  You can
  494. print the reports to the screen, to a file, or to the printer.

  496. With the Dual Currency option you can enter your card values in one
  497. country's currency, and display them in another country's currency.  This is
  498. extremely beneficial if you use a price guide for your card values.  Enter
  499. the U.S.A. pricing found in the magazine and display those values in either
  500. U.S.A. or Canadian values.

  502. You can protect your card data by using the Password feature.  Cards
  503. cannot be edited, deleted, or added without the correct password.
  504.  
  505. The search feature is extremely powerful.  You can search across all sets,
  506. all sets in a single sport, across a single set, or for the first matching
  507. card.  You can restrict your searches to certain card suppliers and to
  508. certain years.

  511. 1. Hardware Configuration
  512.  
  513.        The JEANius software requires the following minimum configuration:
  514.  
  515.                - Any MS-DOS compatible computer system.
  516.                - Minimum of 512 Kilobytes of memory.
  517.                - Computer must contain a hard drive with a minimum of 4 1/2
  518.                megabytes of free storage.  Once installed only 2 megabytes of
  519.                storage are required.
  520.  
  521.        For optimum system performance your computer system should contain
  522.        the above as well as the following:
  523.  
  524.                - EGA or VGA colour monitor
  525.                - A 386 or 486 based system.
  526.                - Printer.
  527.                - Mouse

  530. 2. Software Installation
  531.  
  532.        The JEANius software comes on either 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" disks.  The
  533.        installation procedure is the same for either case.
  534.  
  535.        You will require a minimum of 4 1/2 megabytes of room on your hard
  536.        drive in order to install the software.  Once the JEANius system is
  537.        installed you only require 2 megabytes to run the software.
  538.  
  539.        To install the JEANius software insert disk #1 into either your A: or
  540.        B: disk drive.  At the DOS prompt type the following, excluding quotes
  541.        "a:install a: c:".  You may replace the a: with b: if you are installing
  542.        from your B: drive, and you may replace the c: with d: or any other
  543.        letter which designates the hard drive you are installing the
  544.        software to.  At this point the JEANius software is copied onto your
  545.        hard drive.
  546.   
  547.        At this point you are able to take advantage of the JEANius software
  548.        with all of its features.  You can start the software at any time by
  549.        typing the following, excluding quotes "jeanius".
  550.  
  551.        The JEANius software requires that you start the JEANius software
  552.        from the directory which contains the software.  For your
  553.        convenience a batch file called jeanius.bat was created for you and
  554.        placed on the root of your hard drive.  This will allow you to start
  555.        the JEANius software very conveniently.

  558.        Disk number one of the JEANius software contains an Update file. 
  559.        This file contains several empty sets.  If you would like to install
  560.        these sets follow the instructions found in the Install Update
  561.        section of this manual.

  563.        Your config.sys file should have lines similar to the following.  Make
  564.        sure that the values are at least as high, if not higher than the
  565.        values shown:

  570.        Refer to your DOS manual for more information on changing these
  571.        values.

  574. 3. Authorization
  575.  
  576.        The authorization screen only applies to the registered version of
  577.        the JEANius software.  The main purpose of the registration screen is
  578.        to display your name and/or company as the registered user of the
  579.        JEANius system.  The Shareware version displays the name SHAREWARE
  580.        in place of the user's name.  This is the only difference between the
  581.        registered and shareware versions of the JEANius Software.
  582.  
  583.        The first time you run the JEANius software you will see the
  584.        Authorization screen.  At this point you must enter a name and/or
  585.        company.  This will authorize your software to run and display your
  586.        name as the registered user of the JEANius System.  Once you have
  587.        properly authorized your system you will note that your name and/or
  588.        company will be displayed on the main screen.
  589.  
  590.        It is strongly recommended that you register your JEANius system by
  591.        sending in the registration form.  This will entitle you to all of the
  592.        benefits stated in the DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT section of this
  593.        manual, as well as allow us to keep you informed of any new revisions
  594.        of the JEANius software.  This software is constantly evolving to
  595.        keep up with your requests.

  599. 4. JEANius Main Menu
  600.  
  601.        The JEANius Main Menu consists of six selections.  These selections
  602.        will be covered in detail under the appropriate sections of this
  603.        manual.

  606. 4.1 Quick Set View
  607.  
  608.        The Quick Set View menu selection is an abbreviated view of your
  609.        sets.  You cannot edit any of the displayed information but you can
  610.        quickly determine which card sets you currently have, and the number
  611.        of these sets.

  613.        You are first asked for a card category.  The four common sport
  614.        categories are shown.  These are Baseball, Basketball, Football, and
  615.        Hockey.  There is also a Custom selection.  Any cards which do not fall
  616.        in the above categories may use this setting, such as Star Trek cards
  617.        and Auto Racing cards.
  618.  
  619.        Once you have established a card category your sets will be
  620.        displayed.  The sets displayed have the category you selected above.
  621.  
  622.        After selecting the category you will be presented with a screen
  623.        which contains the following information of each set:
  624.  
  625.                - The Issue Year
  626.                - The Card Set Supplier
  627.                - The Card Sets Name
  628.                - The Country of Origin
  629.                - The Lowest Card Number from this Set
  630.                - The Highest Card Number from this Set
  631.                - The Number of Sets on Hand
  632.                - The Mint Value of Each Set
  633.  
  634.        Up to fifteen sets are displayed on each screen.  If more sets are
  635.        available you may see these by using the Cursor Up, Cursor Down,
  636.        Page Up, and Page Down keys.

  638.        From this screen you can enter the Price Guide screen by pressing
  639.        the F2 key.

  642. 4.1.1 Price Guide Screen
  643.  
  644.        This screen is designed to display your card sets in a format which is
  645.        very similar to the Price Guide magazines which are currently
  646.        available.  This screen displays all the Premium cards from your set. 
  647.        The card class, card number, card name, near mint value, and mint
  648.        values are displayed.
  649.  
  650.        Indicator arrows are also displayed if the value of the card has
  651.        risen or fallen from the initial value of the card.  The indicator
  652.        arrows can be displayed in one of three different styles, see the
  653.        Utilities screen for the styles available.

  656.        The F8 key will allow you to toggle between two country's currency
  657.        values.  For example you may choose to enter card values in U.S.A.
  658.        funds and display their values in Canadian values.

  660.        To return to the Quick Set View screen press the Return button on
  661.        the bottom of the screen.

  663.        Once you have returned to the Quick Set View screen you can return
  664.        to the Main Menu by pressing the ESCAPE key.

  667. 4.2 Examine Card Sets
  668.  
  669.        This section of the JEANius system is used to track your sets.  If you
  670.        are collecting cards in order to complete a set use this option.
  671.  
  672.        This option is also very useful if you plan to track card values for
  673.        other purposes.  For example you may be a retailer, or you may
  674.        evaluate cards for insurance or appraisal purposes.
  675.  
  676.        If you never intend to complete a set, but would only like to track a
  677.        few cards from a set it would be better to use the Examine Single
  678.        Cards section of the JEANius software.
  679.  
  680.        When you select the Examine Card Sets option you will see the initial
  681.        set screen.  This screen is used to define a set name for your set, as
  682.        well as to provide some set specific information.
  683.  
  684.        On the bottom of the screen you will notice a button bar.  This bar
  685.        has ten choices on it.  They will be discussed in turn, as well as any
  686.        other screen features which relate to them.

  688.        All of these selections on the button bar can be selected by pressing
  689.        the highlighted letter, using the tab key to move to that button and
  690.        pressing the return key, or using a mouse.

  693. 4.2.1 F1-Key (Quick Key Help Guide)

  695.        This key displays a Key Guide for all active keys which are not
  696.        displayed on the button bar.

  698. 4.2.2 F5-Key (Additional Set Information)

  700.        This option can be password protected.  This would not allow the user
  701.        to add or edit any card information without entering the correct
  702.        password.  This is set in the Utilities Screen.

  705.        If the words 'More Data' are displayed for the current set, this
  706.        indicates that their is more data available.  You may view and/or
  707.        change this data by using the F5 option.  Any amount of set specific
  708.        information may be stored.

  711. 4.2.3 F6-Key (Update Set's Team Info)
  712.  
  713.        The F6 key permits you to update team information for the entire set.
  714.  
  715.        When you first select this option you are presented with a list of
  716.        teams.  One must be selected to continue.  You will then enter the
  717.        Update Set's Team Info screen.
  718.  
  719.        This screen displays the currently selected team on the top of the
  720.        screen.  You may enter team information for any card and any class of
  721.        card.  Initially the class field is empty, which indicates that you are
  722.        working the regular cards from this set.
  723.  
  724.        Type in the card numbers from this set which belong to the currently
  725.        displayed team.  When you are finished with this team, you may press
  726.        the 'T' key to select a new team.
  727.  
  728.        Continue entering card numbers, and selecting teams for all cards of
  729.        this set.  If you want to enter teams for your special cards such as
  730.        Holograms, press the 'C' key to change the class of cards.

  732.        Press the ESCAPE key to return to the main menu.

  735. 4.2.4 F7-Key (Update Set's Price Info)
  736.  
  737.        The F7 key permits you to update the entire set's price information.
  738.  
  739.        When you select this option you are first asked for this set's common
  740.        price.  After this you will enter the Update Set's Price Info screen.

  742.        The entire set will be displayed in order, starting with the record for
  743.        a full set.
  744.  
  745.        You will notice that the title bar indicates several options available
  746.        to you.  These keys are used to mark the special flags for your cards.
  747.  
  748.        Notice that all of the cards have the common price.  You will need to
  749.        go through this set and mark only the non-common cards with the new

  752.        Start by entering the Mint value for this set.  You will notice that
  753.        when you press the enter key, the cursor will move to the next
  754.        record.  Enter all of the non-common prices for your set.

  756.        You may use the CRUP, CRDN, PGUP, and PGDN keys to move through your
  757.        set.  Press the ESCAPE key to exit when completed.

  759.        You will be asked if you are sure you want your set's prices over
  760.        written.  If you feel you made a mistake then press the 'N' key.  If you
  761.        are satisfied with your work, press the 'Y' key.

  763.        If 'Y' was selected the current value of all cards in your set will
  764.        move into the init value field, and the value field will be over written
  765.        with the new data you just typed in.

  823.        JEANius system.  You will notice that the screen changes and some of
  824.        the fields on the screen become active.  At that point your cursor
  825.        moves into the Issue Year field.

  1329.        the main set screen and change the highcard to be lower than the
  1330.        desired card to delete.

  1332.        Another safety feature is that you cannot delete a card unless the
  1333.        CARDNAME field is not filled in.  Use the EDIT function to edit the
  1334.        cardname and remove the name before deletion.

  1337. 4.2.10.7 Locate Rec

  1339.        The JEANius Locate option is extremely powerful.  When you select
  1340.        this option you will enter the first of two screens associated with
  1341.        this option.

  1344.        The first screen is used to fine tune the search parameters.  There
  1345.        are four different Search Styles.  These are All Sets, Current Sport,
  1346.        Current Set, and Single Card.  You set the search style by moving to
  1347.        the desired selection with the tab cursor keys or mouse, and pressing
  1348.        the space bar or clicking the mouse.
  1349.  
  1350.        The Search Styles only work from the Examine Card Sets Screen, and
  1351.        not from the Examine Single Cards Screen.  In the Single Cards Screen
  1352.        you can only use the Single Card option.
  1353.  
  1354.        When you select either All Sets or Current Sport the year fields with
  1355.        be highlighted.  The year fields are only active with these selections. 
  1356.        The Starting year has been filled in for you with the earliest year
  1357.        found in your card sets.  The ending year has been filled in with the
  1358.        latest year found in your sets.  You can narrow the range of years to
  1359.        search for to any range within these years.

  1361.        Using the Select Suppliers to Search For option will allow you to fine
  1362.        tune your search to certain card supplier or manufacturers.
  1363.  
  1364.        After you have set your locate options you can enter the second
  1365.        screen by selecting the Return to Locate Screen option.

  1367.        The second screen allows you to more specifically fine tune your
  1368.        search criteria.  In this screen you can select one of two search
  1369.        styles.  The first is Value and the second is Expression.
  1370.  
  1371.        You select which style of search you desire by moving your cursor to
  1372.        the desired selection and pressing the space bar.  You will notice
  1373.        that when you select value the top fields are highlighted and the
  1374.        bottom fields are dimmed or ghosted out.

  1376.        When you select expression the top fields are dimmed and the bottom
  1377.        fields are highlighted.  You can only enter data into the fields
  1378.        designated for the type of search you are about to perform.

  1382.        expression.  For example you could search for a CARDNAME of JOHN
  1383.        DOE, or a VALUE of 2.00.  The key here is that you are searching for a

  1387.        down menu button to the right of the value field.  Press the enter key
  1388.        and a list of all the available fields will be displayed.

  1392.        search for.  For example if your are searching for a CARDNAME enter a

  1397.        bottom of the screen.  If you had desired to search all cards which

  1401.        The search by expression option is useful for searches which can not
  1402.        be done using Value.  You might desire searches with multiple
  1403.        expressions.  For example you may want to find all the rookie cards

  2349.        The Utilities menu currently has six options.  These are discussed
  2350.        next.

  2352. 4.5.1 Install Update
  2353.  
  2354.        This option allows you to install any optional data disks which you
  2355.        may have purchased from us.
  2356.  
  2357.        The installation of an update disk is a two step process.  The first
  2358.        step is to exit out of the JEANius system and go to the DOS prompt. 
  2359.        From here you put your data update disk in drive A: or B:.  You then
  2360.        type the following excluding the quotes "a:update a: c:".  You can
  2361.        replace the a: with a: or b:
  2362.  
  2363.        Depending on which drive you have put your data disk into, and you
  2364.        can replace the c: with the drive location of your JEANius software. 
  2365.        At this point the update data files will be copied onto your hard
  2366.        drive.
  2367.  
  2368.        The next step is to enter your JEANius software, go into the Utilities
  2369.        menu, and select the Install Update option.  The JEANius system will
  2370.        then add all of the data files previously copied onto your hard drive
  2371.        into the JEANius system.
  2372.  
  2373.        The data is installed in the following way.  If a set is found in your
  2374.        sets with the same year, name, supplier, and country as one currently
  2375.        being installed, you will be allowed to do one of three things.  You may
  2376.        either Update Set Info, Append this Set, or Ignore this Set.

  2379.        By Updating Set Info you can update all of your set information.  This
  2380.        includes the card names, card values, card teams, and all card flags.   
  2381.        By using the Append option the set is added to your collection,
  2382.        however your original set name is renamed.  Three periods (...) are
  2383.        added to the beginning of your sets name.  You may edit this name
  2384.        later if you like.

  2387. 4.5.2 Update Prices
  2388.  
  2389.        This option allows you to keep your card values current.  By
  2390.        purchasing the Price Update disk option from us, you need not bother
  2391.        typing in new card values yourself.

  2393.        To update your prices you first put the price update disk in the drive
  2394.        of your choice.  Select the Update Price option, and you will be
  2395.        allowed to select the disk drive containing the Price Update disk.
  2396.  
  2397.        You  will then be asked if you would like to have the Initial Values
  2398.        Replaced by Your Current Values.  To make the best use of the Price
  2399.        Guide screen and report we suggest you allow the replacement of the
  2400.        initial values with the current values.  The choice is yours however.

  2403. 4.5.3 Transfer Set
  2404.  
  2405.        This option is only active if you have more than one collection, and if
  2406.        you are currently using the non-primary collection.  The primary
  2407.        collection is always stored in the \jeanius\dbfs directory.

  2409.        If you have selected a non-primary collection this option will permit
  2410.        you to copy a set from the primary collection, to a new collection.
  2411.

  2413. 4.5.4 Add/Edit Teams

  2415.        Use this option to add or edit any teams.  Once a team has been
  2416.        created you are not allowed to delete it.  Be careful with this option. 
  2417.        If you change a team name incorrectly, all of the cards in your
  2418.        collection using this team will display the incorrect information.

  2488.        The Configure Printer Options selection allows you to change how the
  2489.        boxes, lines, and rise/fall arrows are displayed on the screen, and
  2490.        printed on your reports.  This allows users with printers which are
  2491.        not IBM graphic compatible to print these reports.  The first two
  2492.        selections (A, and B) of both the boxes, and arrows are for IBM graphic
  2493.        compatible printers only.  The balance of the selections will allow the
  2494.        reports to print properly on all printers.
  2495.  
  2496.        You may also select which printer port to use.  The default selection
  2497.        is PRN:, you can change this to LPT1:, LPT2:, COM1:, or COM2:.  If you
  2498.        decide to use the COM ports you must use the mode command from DOS
  2499.        to properly set up your COM ports, and to redirect your printer
  2500.        output.  For example you could type the following:

  2517.        magazine with the values displayed in American currency.  Enter the
  2518.        name of the country you are using to input your prices into this

  2532.        Enter the exchange rate of the Exchange Countries currency here.

  2535.        equivalent of a single U.S.A. dollar.  Enter this value in Canadian
  2536.        dollars.  A US dollar for example may be worth $1.10 currently so you
  2537.        would enter this value here.  If the dollar values change you can edit
  2538.        this field again to display the card values properly.

  2540.        You are not restricted to using U.S.A. or Canadian values in the
  2541.        JEANius system.  Use any values you desire.  The above is for example
  2542.        purposes only.

  2545. 4.5.6.4 Main Passcode

  2547.        This field is used to set a passcode to enter the Configure Other
  2548.        Options menu selection.  If you set this field to a non-zero value you
  2549.        will need to remember this value to re-enter this screen.  This give
  2550.        you more access control to areas of the software where someone may
  2551.        inadvertently cause some damage, or change your data if you don't
  2552.        desire it.

  2554.        If you forget the passcode the only way to restore your system is to
  2555.        delete the JEANIUS.CFG file from DOS, and re-enter the JEANius
  2556.        software.  A new JEANIUS.CFG file will be created for you.  You will
  2557.        have to re-enter you printer and passcode options.

  2560. 4.5.6.5 Write Passcode
  2561.  
  2562.        The write passcode is used in certain areas of the JEANius software. 
  2563.        If you attempt to delete a card or set, add a card or set, edit a card
  2564.        or set, or transfer a card to or from a set, and this passcode is a
  2565.        non-zero value you will be required to enter the correct write
  2566.        passcode.  If you do not enter the correct passcode the desired
  2567.        option will not take place.  However if you do enter the correct
  2568.        passcode once, the JEANius system will assume that you are an
  2569.        authorized user

  2573.        you exit the JEANius software and re-enter you will be asked again.

  2590.        the JEANius system sets up an initial set of database files on your
  2591.        hard drive, in the \JEANIUS\DBFS directory.

  2593.        This directory must remain.  However, if you require additional
  2594.        collections you may do the following:

  2596.                From DOS create a new data directory.  This directory can be on
  2597.                any drive and have any name, with two exceptions.  You cannot
  2598.                create any directory within the \JEANIUS\DBFS\ directory, and
  2599.                you cannot use the name \DBFS\ for any directory.

  2601.                From the Data Directory option in the JEANius program, select
  2602.                the new directory.  To do so you must select the directory
  2603.                which contains your data.

  2605.        The selected set of files will be in use until you change the Data
  2606.        Directory again.

  2608.        When the JEANius system first boots up, your selected data files are
  2609.        searched for.  If the files are not found, or perhaps your files where
  2610.        on a floppy disk, and not in the drive, then the JEANius system will
  2611.        select the default \JEANIUS\DBFS\ directory for it's files.
